Dr. Wyllie, Mrs. McGraw and a few students recently visited High Flight Academy at the Butler Airport to learn more about a unique program being offered to juniors and seniors.
The Community College of Beaver County, in partnership with Butler County Community College, is bringing its nationally recognized Aviation Academy program to the Pittsburgh-Butler Regional Airport at the High Flight Academy location. This joint venture will afford high school juniors and seniors in Butler County the ability to gain up to 28 college credits towards the associate degree in aviation by the time they graduate high school.
Some of the programs offered include Professional Piloting and Air Traffic Control. These courses are taught at High Flight Academy located at the Butler Airport. Students are required to complete an application, receive a recommendation from their school counselor, provide a transcript and possibly take placement exams. Students are also required to maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA throughout enrollment courses.
This opportunity is open to students in 11th and 12th grade. Participating students will earn a minimum of 12 (and up to 28) postsecondary credit hours through the partnership of Community College of Beaver County (CCBC) and Butler County Community College.
There is a tuition fee for the program. However, students who are Pell Grant eligible (any amount) can attend the program entirely for free.
The Aviation Academy program will host the "Aim for the Future" event on Friday, May 10 at 9:30 am. This event showcases opportunities in aviation and gives students a snapshot of the program. There will be hands-on activities as well as a build-your-own taco bar. Students will leave with applications and information regarding this new very unique program.
